Saturday is another huge day of bowl games but there are also good sized betting boards in both the NBA and college basketball. For the student-athletes in particular, there are some very intriguing afternoon TV games. Let’s take a quick look at those. Gonzaga vs Illinois - 1:00ET, CBS
The only way to follow Gonzaga is to use Mapquest, since they are always on the move. This time they travel to Chicago to take on Illinois, beginning a difficult four game road trip. The Bulldogs are not as talented as last year’s club; however the trio of Matt Bouldin, Steven Gray and Demetri Goodson give the Zags a terrific backcourt with versatility. If frontcourt players Elias Harris and Robert Sacre continue to improve, this squad could be intriguing come March. Gonzaga’s lack of quickness explains 14-26 ATS record versus teams making 45 percent or more of their shots.

Junior point guard Demetri McCamey is Illinois’ most irreplaceable player. Not only is he the team’s leading scorer, but he’s the only proven point guard on the roster, with freshmen Brandon Paul and D.J. Richardson still learning. Though many of Illinois defensive number look above average, they have has distinct lapses, which won’t cut in against better teams like Gonzaga. Big guys Mike Davis and Mike Tisdale need to be more assertive wanting the ball and playing defense. The Fighting Illini is 46-18 ATS when they score 75 to 80 points and they are expected to be in that range here.

Prediction: Play on Illinois

Louisville at Kentucky - 3:30ET, CBS
If increased passion is a goal for you in 2010, watch this contest to see how it’s done. The stakes are raised for this Bluegrass State battle, with coaching giants Rick Pitino and John Calipari meeting. As usual, Louisville lost games in December it shouldn’t have, but that just gives coach Pitino a reason to use some of motivational genius and the Cardinals have responded. Louisville still has talented players that can deliver impressive results like veteran guards Preston Knowles, Edgar Sosa and Jerry Smith, along with powerful Samardo Samuels up front. The Cardinals are 17-4 ATS on the road the last few seasons.

After becoming the first team in college basketball to win 2,000 games, Kentucky sets it sights on cross-state rival. Freshman guard John Wall is living up to considerable hype and he’s receiving plenty of help from fellow backcourt mate Eric Bledsoe. Junior Patrick Patterson and freshman DeMarcus Cousins have posted several double-doubles for the Wildcats. Interesting to see how Wall reacts against Louisville’s skilled veteran guards. Kentucky is 9-1 ATS after two straight games outrebounding opponent by 15 or more.

These acidic rivals have split last 12 matchups SU and ATS.

Prediction: Play on Kentucky

Villanova at Marquette - 3:30ET, ESPN2
With the return of guard Reggie Redding, the Villanova backcourt is even more lethal. When paired with Corey Stokes, Corey Fisher and Scottie Reynolds, Redding brings another dimension to Jay Wright’s club. Redding’s university-imposed first semester suspension allowed for the development of first year players Dominic Cheek and Maalik Wayns and made the Wildcats bench substantially better. Villanova heads to Milwaukee 18-7 ATS after a win by 10 points or more over the last two seasons.

Marquette has a noticeable lack of depth with just nine scholarship players. The Golden Eagles have flown to fast starts in the Big East, that’s more problematic this campaign, having West Virginia, Georgetown and Villanova twice in first four contests. Coach Buzz Williams is leaning heavy on Lazar Hayward for heavy minutes and Jimmy Butler along with Maurice Acker are wearing the soles of shoes thin on the hardwood. Marquette is 15-5 ATS as a home underdog of six points or less or pick.

The Golden Eagles are 4-3 and 6-1 ATS vs. Villanova, including 2-0 SU and ATS at home since 1997.

Prediction: Play on Marquette
