Head coach Jamie Dixon’s Pittsburgh team is top ranked in college basketball. Still, you can’t fault him for not getting too excited, particularly with matchups vs. Louisville, Syracuse, West Virginia, Villanova, and Notre Dame next on the docket. The Panthers’ work has just begun, and Saturday’s matchup at Louisville could be their toughest test to date. The Cardinals have turned it on since Big East play started, winning and covering their first three contests. Tip-time for this huge showdown is 6:00 PM ET, and the action can be found on Channel 206 on your DirecTV dial, or on whatever channel your local cable provider hosts the Worldwide Sports Leader, ESPN.

Since upsetting Georgetown on the road on Jan.3, No.1 Pittsburgh (16-0, 7-4 ATS) has had relatively easy opponents. That stops now starting in Louisville, where the Cardinals await. The Panthers strength this season is the ability to dominate in the frontcourt, being one of the best rebounding teams in the country. Sam Young, Tyrell Biggs and undersized DeJuan Blair use their frames to wall off opposing rebounders. Pitt is loaded with experience and plays like it; they are 15-5 ATS in January games over the last three seasons.

Louisville (12-3, 8-7 ATS) in the end, might be the best team in the Big East, they just collectively have to decide to play like it. If coach Rick Pitino actually received a 40 minute effort, he might be able to actually enjoy his team play. Little by little, the signs are appearing this team might play it its potential. The Cardinals will need “onions” against a street-brawler like Pittsburgh. Louisville is 28-10 ATS against conference opponents since the start of 2007 Big East campaign.

These two schools have met mostly in conference tourney, having split four games. Louisville has won both regular season meetings and is 8-1 ATS when they grab 40 to 44 rebounds and undoubtedly will be psyched trying to defeat number one.
