Kansas needs just one more win be the regular season Big 12 champions this season

2007-03-02

Kansas needs just one more win be the regular season Big 12 champions this season and will have to do so against the best collection of young talent since, well the Jayhawks of last year. Kevin Durant has captured the imagination of college basketball fans with silky smooth skills and seemingly unlimited shooting range. Durant had 30 points and 16 boards in a double overtime soon to be ESPN Classic contest against Texas A&M on Wednesday, a game that had more big shots than a Wal-Mart stockholders meeting. Durant did not do it alone, as point guard D.J. Augustin had 25 points and was unstoppable driving to the basket.

This is all great fodder for Kansas who lays in wait in the season finale at Allen Fieldhouse. The Jayhawks players likely realize they are looking in the mirror, facing a freshman-based team, just like they were a year ago and would like to derail their ride. Kansas is one of the few top teams that is still playing sharp basketball with eight straight wins (7-1 ATS) winding down the Big 12 season. With most teams failing around them, Bill Self squad could all but lock up a number one seed with a win.

Kansas will come in rested, having last played Monday at Oklahoma in a game that was not as close as the final score indicates. Interestingly enough, all four of the Jayhawks losses have occurred when they have played with three or more days rest and they are only 7-6 ATS. They will face a Texas team that figures to be physically and emotionally spent. The Longhorns and Aggies is always full of emotion and add in Rick Barnes talented youngsters played double TO thriller and now are on the road. In almost the same circumstance earlier this season, they lost in double overtime to Oklahoma State and came up empty at Villanova in next contest.

The Longhorns are attempting to tie Kansas for first place and are 10-5 ATS in conference games. The teamís true road record is acceptable at 6-4 and 5-5 ATS. Kansas is 16-2 at home (8-8 ATS) winning by a superlative 23.8 points per game. In the last five meetings the home team is 4-1 ATS.

Look for Texas to give its best shot, but a fresher Kansas team pulls away for comfortable victory. The StatFox Power Ratings indicate Kansas by 13
